Republican nominee Donald Trump is a proponent of all publicity is good publicity. That was put to the test this weekend with his feud with Khizr Khan, the father of fallen veteran Captain Humayun Khan along with Trump’s lack of knowledge of geography. First lets discuss the feud with Mr. Khan.
First Trump responded to Mr. Khan’s speech at the DNC by saying, as a business man he has made many sacrifices for this country by taking risks in business and creating hundreds and thousands of jobs.
Then Trump went on to personally attack Mr. Khan by asking if he really knows the US constitution. Really Trump? That was your response?
Trump went on to dig himself into a deeper hole by offering his opinion of why Mrs. Khan didn’t speak at the DNC by saying in an interview with ABC’s This Week, “If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say.”
In which Mrs. Khan responded in an op-ed in the Washington Post. She stated in the op-ed that her son’s death is still difficult for her to speak about. This lead to congressional leaders Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan to release statements defending Captain Humayun Khan service and bravery. Also Trump’s Vice President nominee, Mike Pence released a statement to try to put out the fire that Trump started.
Just when you think that Trump’s weekend couldn’t get worse, it did. In an interview with ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Trump made a huge blunder about his recollection about whether or not he had a relationship with Russian leader Putin or not and about Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine.
If you don’t want to watch the whole interview, the remarks were made about three minutes into the interview and went on for a couple of minutes. During those few minutes Trump states that he doesn’t have a relationship with Putin but Stephanopoulos reminds him of his earlier comments from 2013 and 2014 where Trump stated that he did have a relationship with Putin.
The interview moved on to geopolitical topic of the Ukraine. Trump stated that “[Putin’s] not going into Ukraine, just so you understand. He’s not going to go to Ukraine,” Trump said.
“Well, he’s already there, isn’t he?” Stephanopoulos replied. In which Trump went on to attack the Obama’s administration for not doing anything.
Lastly, Trump’s answer about the change made in the Republican platform softening their response to Putin’s annexing the Crimea region of the Ukraine was another example of Trump either inability or lack of interest to know something, anything about what is going on within the party that nominated him.
Trump may know the art of the deal but he sure showed that he doesn’t know anything about the art of geography. What’s worse is that all this distracted and squashed the horrible performance by his opponent Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton on Fox News with Chris Wallace.
In this interview she called into question the memory of Patricia Smith, the mother of Sean Smith who was killed in the attack on the Benghazi consulate. Hillary stated “I may not fully recall what I told her about the video.” As bad as that exchange was it wasn’t the worse part of the interview.
Later on Hillary went on to blatantly lie and claim that FBI Director Comey exonerated her on the issue of receiving and sending classified emails over her own private server. Mike Wallace then pointed out that was not what Comey testified in front of congress that in fact she did receive and send classified information. Clinton went on to spin it and pivot to a different issue.
This weekend should have been how Hillary Clinton had a horrible weekend and weakened her image of being truthful but instead that got squashed because of Trump’s big mouth and his thin skin. Trump and Hillary not only shot themselves in the foot but then they both proceeded to insert those feet into their mouths. As a wise man once said “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging!” Trump and Hillary need to follow that advice and stop digging!!!
