The Rise of the Deplorables

By Matt Johnson

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past 18 months, you know that Donald J. Trump is at the doorstep of the White House. And during this 2016 election season, and thanks to comments by Hillary Clinton the democratic nominee for president, a group of supporters now known as the “Deplorables!” have emerged from the ranks of the general electorate.

As Clinton stated at a fundraiser in New York on September 9th,

You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the ‘basket of deplorables.’ Right? [They’re] racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it.”

And for most elections, these comments may have shamed voters into the corner, but not the Deplorables. Absolutely not! They took this offensive title and turned it into their battle cry. As an example, a field trip through Donald J. Trump’s Facebook page, and Hillary Clinton’s as well, will reveal pride and loyalty for one’s team, albeit harsh and belligerent at times. But the Deplorables should not be mistaken for the Tea Party.

Many from this group of supporters existed long before Trump began his presidential run. In fact, some of today’s Deplorables did indeed participate in the Tea Party movement from a few years ago. As Donald Allen, Editor-in-chief of Our Black News and former Tea Party member explained in a recent online interview with TSS,

I am as deplorable as they get.

Again, the Tea Party and the Deplorables are not necessarily the same, nor did one evolve into the other, although this may appear to be the case aesthetically and from the outside. As Allen elucidated the difference between the Tea Party and the Deplorables,

Actually I think they’re totally different. I think the tea party had a political agenda that was circumvented by members of the Republican Party and the deplorable’s have an agenda that is trying to be circumvented by the mainstream media and Republicans that have turned into rhinos.

Many parts of the media will drive a particular narrative without taking the perspective of this highly motivated group of voters; the media won’t provide context for their motivations. Instead, what the public hears is that this merry band of rebels are sexist, racist, and bigoted peasants as Clinton emphasized in her statements last month. But even if this is true for some in the movement, it still doesn’t prevent these citizens from practicing their constitutional rights by participating in the electoral process, nor does it preclude them from arguing for a particular set of public policies.

And what are their policy solutions? In this sense, they are somewhat aligned with the Tea Party of old. As Mary Grabar from PJ Media explained in her article Deplorable: The Smearing of the Middle Class by Pseudo-Intellectuals

They are concerned about federalism and spending and believe in representational government.

In other words, they are arguing for smaller government, reduced spending, and opposition from what they perceive as government intervention into the private lives of citizens. They believe the government should not be in the business of telling people what they should or should not be doing with their lives.

As a consequence and application of this political philosophy, an issue like marriage equality would be left to the states. And this difference in where government policy ought to reside, the state or the federal government, can be traced back to The Federalist Papers of the late 18th century, although a piece of historical information like this is surely to be left out of the national dialogue via the mainstream media.

So from the perspective of a deplorable, Donald J. Trump is a means to an end. He is the sledge-hammer that can break up the establishment. And breaking up the establishment is more important than the past indiscretions of a person or old business grievances.

For example, in the most recent airing of his dirty laundry, the mainstream media has been replaying a recording between Billy Bush and Donald J. Trump, where Trump talked about “Grabbing [a woman] by the pussy!” from an archived Access Hollywood tape from 2005. However, this hasn’t thinned out the ranks. In fact, it has embolden the Deplorables.

This is because they view the mainstream media as partners in an attempt to sidetrack Trump’s anti-establishment candidacy. Remember, Trump is the sledge-hammer that will break up the perceived political monopoly in Washington. And as far as the Deplorables are concerned, the media is no different from “The Mouth” in the graphic novel V for Vendetta. But “What about the women who have been sexually harassed by Donald Trump?!”

As the Deplorables see it, these women are being paraded by the mainstream media in an attempt to once again destroy the sledge-hammer that will break the establishment. And they would also say, where were these women the past three decades? Again, the airing of Trump’s dirty laundry is a small slap on the wrist for addressing systemic issues facing those Americans who have felt public policy and representation have been working against them.

Consider this, perhaps it is the case that he did all of those things. But in the eyes of the Deplorables, this is a redeemed man who is going to fix what needs to be fixed, because the system is favoring the elite and not the hard-working American. And this gets to the root of the Deplorables battle cries.

As Tyler Durden of Zero Hedge elucidated in a recent article titled The Deplorables” – Who We Are and What We Want

We are defined and unified by our desire for a society based on the integral love of freedom and a fervent opposition to collectivism and totalitarianism.

So indeed, those in the mainstream media will print articles about Trump’s authoritarianism and how his supporters are willing to follow a “strongman” straight into fascism, but this misses the perspective of the Deplorables. They already believe that this country is heading into totalitarianism. It’s just happening in a different way and much of it resides in the policies of liberal and progressive politicians, their RINO (Republican In Name Only) counterparts, and the mainstream medias’ portrayal of one Donald J. Trump and his Deplorables.

And with only days to go until election night on November 8th, it’s difficult to say how much of an impact the Deplorables will have on swaying the election in Trump’s favor. According to the latest data by Nate Silver’s 538, it appears as though Hillary Clinton will be the 45th president of the United States. But unfavorable polls don’t seem to phase the Deplorables. As Donald Allen later stated in his interview with TSS,

All the polls for the most part, at least 80% of them, are incorrect.

And he’s not alone. Many Deplorables believe the same thing. Time will tell how influential this “basket of deplorables” has on the final outcome on this 2016 election. But one thing is for sure, they will be in this thing until the bitter end. And make no mistake, it will be bitter and it will be deplorable.
